Here are just a few of the places to eat in Kailua-Kona that we cover in the guide.

The Coffee Shack: A must-stop for breakfast or lunch in Captain Cook, The Coffee Shack serves a great cup of coffee, freshly baked pies, and some of the best chocolate cream pie you’ll ever have. The view is incredible, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the morning. The café is small, so if you want to sit down, it’s best to arrive early.

Kaaloa’s Super J’s Authentic Hawaiian: Nestled along the road on the way to Captain Cook, Super J’s is a down-to-earth spot highly recommended by locals for its hearty, traditional Hawaiian food. The pork lau lau is the star of the show, but you don’t want to miss the kalua pig and cabbage, macaroni salad or desserts either! The welcoming atmosphere feels like stepping into a local kitchen, where every guest is treated as family. With simple décor and a focus on flavor, Super J’s is the kind of place you will be craving long after you leave the island.

Shaka Tacoz: This place is right across the street and they make the best tacos. When we visit, we often live off these tacos!

Sack N Save Kona: Don’t let the grocery store exterior fool you, this local favorite is known for excellent fresh poke right at the back of the market. They have a variety of flavors like spicy ahi and shoyu tuna that many locals and visitors rave about. It’s a great spot to grab a poke bowl or a pound to go, and the portions are generous and reasonably priced compared to other Kona options.  And they even let you try samples before buying!

Huggo’s On The Rocks: Right on the beach with incredible ocean views, Huggo’s is a great spot for happy hour, sunset watching, and live music. Our favorites are fish tacos, sliders, and nachos. For dessert, their Hula Pie with macadamia nut ice cream and chocolate is a must-try.

Scandinavian Shave Ice: Right in the heart of downtown Kona, this spot is famous for some of the island’s best shave ice. The lines are often long, but it’s worth the wait for the finely shaved ice and endless flavor combinations. You can add extras like ice cream in the center or a sweet topping for a perfect tropical treat after a day at the beach.

Fish Hopper Kona: This place has a beautiful view of the water and great food. The parking is easy and the portions are huge. Our favorite here is the clam chowder. The drinks are also very good.
