Pack light because the weather here is fantastic!
Sundresses, shorts, flip-flops, and swimsuits are ideal for the island. Only a few restaurants have dress codes that don’t permit flip-flops or tank tops. Get more packing tips for Kailua-Kona in our Kailua-Kona Area Guide
During the summer, it’s helpful to keep the warm climate in mind. Heat and humidity can make both days and nights feel warmer than expected. Staying in a place with air conditioning can make your trip much more comfortable.
It is also helpful to know that the Kona International Airport is completely outdoors. Choosing an early morning or evening flight can help you avoid spending long periods sitting in the heat on departure day.

Clothing:
- Pack lightweight clothing made of cotton or moisture-wicking materials to stay cool and comfortable.
- Bring a few swimsuits for beach days, snorkeling, and poolside relaxation.
- Cover-ups are great for transitioning from the beach to other activities. Rash guards offer sun protection and are helpful for water sports.
- Kona is laid-back, so casual attire like shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses are perfect for most outings. Bring a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.
Sunscreen:
The water around the Big Island of Hawaiʻi is so clear that you can even see the ocean floor from the airplane!
With such beautiful waters, it’s important to protect them.
If you plan to go in the water, only mineral sunscreen is allowed. State laws prohibit chemical sunscreens containing ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate because they can harm coral and disrupt marine ecosystems. Following these rules helps keep Hawaiʻi’s reefs healthy and the ocean vibrant for everyone to enjoy.
Mineral sunscreen is easy to find on the island and comes in both spray-on and rub-in options. While spray sunscreen may seem convenient, we highly recommend the rub-in kind, even if you normally prefer sprays. Spray mineral sunscreen tends to leave white overspray everywhere, parking lots are often covered in visible footprints where people applied it, making a big mess. Rub-in sunscreen is much more controlled, cleaner, and easier to apply properly, making it the better choice for both the environment and everyone around you.
